Introduction-
The tour includes seven stops. Please feel free to spend as much time as you would like at each stop. We recommend at least five to ten minutes, however you may proceed at your own pace.
The town and later city of Manchester was long nicknamed ‘Dogtown,’ and it was often looked at as Richmond’s little ‘sister city.’ For much of its existence, it was a working class city, with factories, mills, and a shipyard and docks that served as port of entry for goods of all kinds, as well as enslaved Africans. Despite its reputation, Manchester played an integral role in the history of the Richmond and central Virginia area. We hope this tour will address themes of regional land ownership. It will also cover class and power structures, and collective historical memory.
